On June 29th, 2019, the Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa (SIGLA) spent a visit to Helmut-Schmidt-University. Prof. Tshela (Dean Faculty of Military Science & Acting Director of SIGLA), Prof. Francois Frey (Emeritus Prof. of Military Science) and Andries Fokkens (Faculty Manager of Military Science) met with Dr. Martin Nassua (Director International Office, HSU), PD Dr. Michael Jonas (Institute for Modern History, HSU), Dan Krause and Sonja Nietz (both Institute for International Politics, HSU) and other colleagues from Helmut-Schmidt-University.

Located at Saldanha Campus, SIGLA is a research institute of Stellenbosch University. SIGLA aims to position itself as one of the leading African leadership institutions and seeks to build leadership capacity and generate knowledge resources in the areas of security for sustainable development. In cooperation with like-minded partners from Africa and beyond its work is dedicated to three related research fields on Africa: leadership, landward security governance and maritime security governance. Their activities include (co-)organising workshops and conferences, lecturing/briefing series, co-designing and offering of academic course programmes accredited with Stellenbosch University, and various research projects.

The round-table participants had a fruitful exchange of research activities and knowledge. They envisaged closer cooperation in certain fields of expertise and agreed to make use of their global network of experts in the future.
